Huston in festival triple play

Actor's in Cannes for 'Queen,' 'Robin' and 'Playoff'

Danny Huston’s history with the Cannes Film Festival seems to be bookended by volcanos. He came here the first time as director of the title sequence of his father’s, John Huston’s, “Under the Volcano,” which screened in competition, and he’s in Cannes this year under the shadow of an ash-spewing volcano in Iceland.

At the Carlton Beach media launch for his next project, “Playoff,” a sports-set drama to be shot in Frankfurt this summer by Israeli director Eran Riklis, Huston laughed as he recounted the various challenges facing Cannes attendance this year.

“Let’s see, we’ve got an airways strike, volcanic ash, tidal waves and a euro currency meltdown. What’s next?”

That first trip with his father may have been 25 years ago but it’s still fresh in the actor’s mind as he unwound from the opening-night screening of Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood,” tubthumped “Playoff” and prepped for tonight’s Cannes Classics screening of John Huston’s recently restored “The African Queen.”

“We were staying out the the Hotel du Cap but the producer and I hung out in Cannes until the reviews in Variety and the other papers came out early in the morning. Then we packed them up and got a ride to the du Cap on the back of a garbage truck.

“I also remember Wim Wenders, who won the Palme d’Or for ‘Paris Texas,’ said to my father, ‘You made the better film’ and my father said, ‘Ask him to put it in writing.’ “
