As founder of the Haitian relief organization JP/HRO, with Diana Jenkins, Sean Penn has recently devoted more time to doing good than making movies.
The actor had developed myriad contacts with emergency workers, doctors and government officials thanks to his Hurricane Katrina charity work, and he used them to good effect to begin work in Haiti less than a week after the Jan. 12 earthquake. To date, Penn’s org in Haiti has distributed food, tents and more than 100,000 pounds of medical supplies. It’s also built a school, clinics and delivered over 136 babies. JP/HRO also took over management of the Petionville refugee camp with 50,000 people and trained Haitians to handle similar emergencies in the future.
