Howard to pen ‘Magician’

Writer set for Briscoe biopic

Gregory Allen Howard (“Remember the Titans”) is set to write the screenplay for an indie biopic based on the life of pro football quarterback Marlin “the Magician” Briscoe.

Project, tentatively titled “The Magician,” will follow pro football’s first black starting quarterback through his rise to the top, his fall into addiction and his path to redemption.

West Omaha Films, founded by actor John Beasley, David B. Clark and Terry Hanna, is producing the film.

Leigh Steinberg and Leigh Steinberg Sports & Entertainment are partnering with West Omaha for the production and consulting on production and marketing.

Briscoe was the 14th-round draft pick for the Denver Broncos in 1968 and finished his first season with 14 touchdown passes, a rookie record that still remains.

He later became an All-Pro receiver for the Buffalo Bills and was a key member of the unbeaten 1972 Miami Dolphins.

Briscoe’s life changed dramatically after his retirement, as he became addicted to drugs, which left him homeless and behind bars. He eventually overcame his addictions to become a mentor to young people in the Los Angeles area; he’s also co-founder of the Field Generals, a nonprofit org featuring black NFL quarterbacks Doug Williams, Randall Cunningham and Warren Moon.

Howard’s credits also include “Ali,” starring Will Smith. He’s repped by WME.
