Sony edits film's language for revised rating
Sony’s latest offering from helmer James L. Brooks, “How Do You Know,” will get a PG-13 rating, after all. After losing its appeal to overturn the original R rating, Sony altered one usage of the word “fuck” to earn the more kid-friendly rating for the Columbia Pictures film. The revised rating is good news for the romantic comedy, as R ratings limit ducats sold to moviegoers under 17 and act as a potential B.O. buzz kill. If the restrictive rating had stuck, “How Do You Know,” toplining Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson, would have been Brooks’ second R-rated pic after “Broadcast News.” Pic lost its ratings battle with the Classification and Rating Appeals Board last week, leaving Sony little choice but to lose some of the language. Sony will target a broad holiday aud when it launches the film wide on Dec. 17.
