Those who walked the red carpet Thursday at Disney’s bow of “Secretariat” had to first squeeze through the starting gate, literally.
The Mouse House’s equine drama received Triple Crown-like treatment at the El Capitan-hosted event, where stars including Diane Lane and John Malkovich shared the spotlight with a horse.
Helmer Randall Wallace said he didn’t know much about horse racing but connected with the contempo-feel of Secretariat’s story. “I always thought that horse racing was for rich people and gambling,” Wallace said at the Hotel Roosevelt after-party. “But I wanted the audience to participate directly in the races, to know what it felt like to be Secretariat.”
Malkovich, however, admitted he grew up around horse racing.
“When I was young my grandfather dragged me to a lot of tracks across the Midwest,” he said. “So while I’m not a gambler, I always kind of liked it, particularly Secretariat.” –
