Helmer signs on to direct indie feature

Joel Hopkins (“Last Chance Harvey) is getting in tune with “Lizard Music,” signing on to direct the indie feature version of Daniel Manus Pinkwater’s young-adult novel.

“Lizard Music” will be produced by Jawal Nga through his New York-based Tiny Dancer Films. Nga exec produced “Last Chance Harvey” and “Howl.” He also produced Sony Pictures Classics’ “Married Life” and First Look’s “Forty Shades of Blue.”

Hopkins is adapting “Lizard Music,” which tells of an 11-year-old boy who exists in a highly imaginative fantasy world of his own creation, until he meets a group of lizard musicians who just might be real.

“For me, Pinkwater’s classic book falls into the best tradition of children’s literature — never underestimating a child’s ability to process both the funny and the dark sides of life,” Hopkins said.

Pinkwater has written more than 80 children’s and young-adult books including “Young Adult Novel,” “Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy From Mars” and “The Hoboken Chicken Emergency.” His latest book, “Adventures of a Cat-Whiskered Girl,” was released this summer.

Hopkins is repped by WME. Pinkwater is repped by the Andrea Brown Literary Agency and Grade A Entertainment.
