Scholarship winner pursues path as critic
With constant cutbacks and some orgs ridding themselves of the position entirely, professional film criticism is not exactly a growth industry.
Yet even in these tough times, Lauren Barnett, a past honoree of the Broadcast Film Critic Assn. scholarship, has kept on the path toward becoming a film critic and hopes the grant gives her a boost on this journey.
“While I was in college, I really fell in love with the way you could dissect a film,” says the Gardner-Webb grad. “I loved dissecting literature, and with film it was the same great feeling.”
The stipend has given her a chance to take on further classes, which she has yet to decide on. Right now Barnett is just interested in finding a way to getting her work read.
“I’ve been writing letters to local papers to try and get my name out there, but there is this fear that the opportunity won’t arrive,” Barnett says. “I’ve begun looking into master programs and in the past few months saw (criticism) as something I really wanted to pursue as a career.”
