Trejo, Rodriguez look sharp at premiere
Twentieth Century Fox pumped up the testosterone levels Wednesday night when it bowed Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete,” rolling out the cast and crew in souped-up lowriders in front of downtown’s Orpheum Theater.
Bad-ass thesp Danny Trejo led the charge on a Harley Davidson clad in the title character’s blade-touting leather vest.
“I didn’t even want to wear this tonight,” Trejo admitted. “Then (Robert) gave me this look, the same look I used to give my kids when they were messing up, and I said, ‘Oh, OK, Robert, I changed my mind.’?”
Rodriguez returned the compliment to Trejo, saying, “You could rock climb this guy’s face.”
” ‘Desperado’ was such a big part of my life,” Rodriguez said before introducing the film. “It was the first time I worked with Cheech, the first time I worked with a man named Quentin Tarantino, and it was also the same time I came up with the idea for ‘Machete.’?”
The new Fox pic is special, says the helmer: “The people asked for it, so we had to go out and make it.”
