Hoi polloi enjoy ‘Toy Story’

Premiere serves a birthday party for 3rd pic's Tim Allen

“It’s like coming back home,” said Disney and Pixar’s creative chief John Lasseter Sunday afternoon at the El Capitan Theater before the preem of “Toy Story 3.” “TS2” had also preemed at the venue in 1999. “You work on these for four years, so that when they’re ready it’s like unwrapping a present,” he added.

Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, was surprised to receive a present of his own on stage at the theater. Tom Hanks (Woody), Lasseter, director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson roused the audience to sing “Happy Birthday” to Allen as costumed characters wheeled out a candle-lit cake for the thesp to blow out.

After-party was held at the “Toy Story 3 Fun Zone,” a carnival-themed event that Disney is hosting behind the theater for ticketbuyers Friday to Aug. 29. Venue offers up a series of play stations to promote the pic’s toys from Mattel, Hasbro and Lego, as well as videogames and a “Dancing With the Toys” stage show.

Cast members Joan Cusack, Michael Keaton, Don Rickles and John Ratzenberger, as well as Disney and Pixar studios prexy Ed Catmull, Britney Spears, Randy Newman and Buzz Aldrin munched on Cinnabon cupcakes and tacos served from the Knockout Taco Truck.
