Actress to play Hobson in Warner Bros. remake

Helen Mirren will star opposite Russell Brand in Warner Bros.’ remake of “Arthur.”

She will play his longtime nanny in a reimagining of the John Gielgud part in the 1981 comedy, in which he played Arthur’s butler.

Jason Winer, who directed the pilot of ABC’s “Modern Family,” will helm “Arthur,” produced by Larry Brezner, Chris Bender and Kevin McCormick. Brand, Scott Kroopf, J.C. Spink and Nick Linnen are exec producing.

In the original, Dudley Moore’s Arthur turned to Gielgud’s Hobson for advice after his family threatens to cut off his inheritance unless he marries a woman he doesn’t love. Gielgud won the supporting actor Oscar for his work.

Peter Baynham penned the new “Arthur” script as a vehicle for Brand. Baynham was a writer on Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” and “Bruno.”

Mirren recently wrapped on Summit Entertainment’s espionage thriller “Red,” and will be seen in indie drama “Love Ranch,” helmed by her husband, Taylor Hackford.

Mirren plays “Prospera,” in a re-imagining of Prospero, in Julie Taymor’s upcoming version of “The Tempest.”
