Point Blank taps helmer for Dempsey pic

Point Blank Prods. has signed Lasse Hallstrom to direct coming-of-age story “Tom’s Dad,” starring Patrick Dempsey.

Story’s set in 1962 Las Vegas with a successful character film actor and a comedy vaudevillian nightclub performer at a crossroads because the changing styles of comedy is making him obsolete. His situation’s complicated by the arrival of his long-estranged young son.

Point Blank’s Joni Levin and Keith Clarke will produce with Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil.

Script for “Tom’s Dad” is penned by Martin Casella.

Clarke has also adapted Herman Wouk’s “Marjorie Morningstar,” and the banner’s out to directors. Novel is set against the backdrop of 1930′s dazzling Broadway, immigrant assimilation and rising anti-Semitism as an 18 yera-old Jewish woman falls deeply in love against her family’s wishes, with a 30-year-old singer-songwriter and womanizer.

Banner recently wrapped production on Peter Weir’s “The Way Back,” co-written by Clarke.

Hallstrom’s most recent project was “Dear John.” He’s attached to direct “The Danish Girl” and “Salmon Fishing in Yemen.”
