Sony vet to also oversee pic co-financing deals
In another exec shuffle at Columbia Pictures, Andrew Gumpert has been upped to prexy of worldwide business affairs and operations.
Gumpert will work alongside Col prexy Doug Belgrad, who became sole Columbia topper after Matt Tolmach exited his prexy post earlier this fall.
Gumpert, who first joined the label in 2005 as exec VP of business affairs, oversees worldwide business affairs and operations for Col. With the promotion, he’ll also be in charge of securing co-financing arrangements and developing alternative revenue streams for Columbia’s theatrical releases.
“In a business that is evolving tech-nologically while adapting to changing and challenging economics, Andrew has provided the kind of forward-thinking leadership that makes him one of the best and brightest minds and negotiators in our industry,” Sony chairman-CEO Michael Lynton and co-chair Amy Pascal said in a statement Tuesday.
Gumpert most recently served as Col prexy of business affairs and administration, a position he held since 2008. Prior to joining Sony, he led business and legal affairs for Miramax’s Dimension Films division for seven years.
At Sony, Gumpert has helped negotiate on behalf of studio pics like “The Social Network,” “Grown Ups,” “2012” and “The Da Vinci Code.”
“I’m privileged to work with Michael, Amy and Doug — they fully understand the dynamic forces affecting our business,” Gumpert said. “As we bring new films of all genres and sizes to the marketplace, we are taking a new approach to our dealmaking rather than predicating our deals on past business models that are no longer sustainable.”
