Celebs turn out for amfAR event

As the Cannes Film Festival began to wind down, celebs from around the globe congregated Thursday at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc for amfAR’s 17th Annual Cinema Against AIDS event.

The gala’s usual host, Sharon Stone, couldn’t be there due to a film-scheduling conflict, and Alan Cumming took her place among the stars, who included Benicio Del Toro, Mick Jagger and Michelle Williams.

Where else would you find Tom Ford touring a tent by Giorgio Armani, who oversaw the event’s decor, which featured understated black walls dotted with an exhibition of works by Richard Hambleton? Two of the artist’s works were auctioned off for a total of $920,000 and the event went on to raise $6.7 million for AIDS research programs. Entertainment was provided by Patti Smith, who sang “Because the Night” at Harvey Weinstein’s request, and Mary J. Blige, who belted out U2’s “One” and an a cappella version of “Stairway to Heaven.” –
