Organization celebrates 25th anniversary
GLAAD, celebrating its 25th anniversary, looked back at a few gay heroes during Friday’s celebration at Harmony Gold. But equal time was given to some of the movement’s nemeses.
“The Talk’s” Holly Robinson Peete recalled how the org had a sit-down meeting with Mel Gibson during its protest of his “Braveheart” in 1991. “A lot of good that did!” said Peete, referring to the star’s more recent controversies.
Jonathan Murray, honored for producing MTV’s “The Real World,” took aim at a current foe: “John McCain is clearly out of his mind!”
On the upside, some recalled how the GLAAD Media Awards came to be known as the gay Oscars or, as Steven Weber put it, “the gayer Oscars.”
