Comedy Impact Report 2010: Standup Guys

“I call myself a reluctant movie star,” says George Lopez. The former sitcom star has juggled a number of projects this past year, including a national tour; his talkshow, “Lopez Tonight,” which averaged 800,000 viewers an episode in its first year; and three features. “Marmaduke” and “The Spy Next Door” fared modestly, earning $84 million and $44 million worldwide, respectively, while the Garry Marshall-helmed “Valentine’s Day” scored big at the B.O. with $217 million.

A veteran road comic, Lopez estimates that his current tour, “I Can Never Do Nuthin’,” has earned more than $18 million. Lopez says that because of the economy, however, he’s playing smaller shows, in 6,000 to 12,000-seat venues compared to the 12,000 to 18,000-seaters of just three years ago. “I’ve scaled down just to keep it at a place where it’ll grow and not decline,” he says.

“I have a separate identity as a standup comedian than I do as a talkshow host,” he says, adding that he probably has six personas total for every project, including animated Lopez, on-camera movie Lopez, charity Lopez and off-camera Lopez. “I had never thought that I had more than this wanting-to-tell-jokes person.”
