"The Pat Tillman Story" will close the festival

AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival has tapped Magnolia’s “Freakonomics” as its opening-night film on June 21 and “The Tillman Story” as its closing-night showing.

“Freakonomics” is based on Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner’s book “Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Exposes the Hidden Side of Everything,” and it’s directed by a team of documakers, including Alex Gibney, Morgan Spurlock, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, Eugene Jarecki and Seth Gordon. Gibney, Spurlock, Grady and Ewing will attend and participate in a post-screening discussion.

Silverdocs has set seven days of programming for more than 80 films plus special screenings, music performances and panel discussions.

Amir Bar-Lev’s “The Tillman Story” chronicles the life of the late Pat Tillman, who walked away from a multimillion-dollar contract with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals in 2002 to join the Army but died from friendly fire in Afghanistan.
