Fox Searchlight acquires ‘Snow Flower’

Studio nabs N. American rights to Chinese drama

Fox Searchlight has acquired North American rights from IDG China Media to Wayne Wang’s drama of female friendship “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.”

Pic, based on the novel by Lisa See, stars Gianna Jun and Li Bing Bing. Script’s written by Ron Bass, Angela Workman, and Michael Ray.

Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan produce and Hugo Shong exec produces.

Story’s set on parallel tracks in China — one in the 19th Century, centered on two 7-year-old girls who are isolated by their families and furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language between the folds of a white silk fan; the other in present day Shanghai, where the descendants struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai.

Kathy Morgan of KMI International is handling international sales.
