Twentieth Century Fox is going surfing with the Beach Boys, winning a bidding war for the rights to the legendary band’s songs that will be the backdrop of an original bigscreen musical.
Fox beat out Universal for the high-profile project. Logline is being kept under wraps, but film will follow a fictional storyline, much as U’s “Mamma Mia!.”
Meron and Zadan, who have worked in both theater and film, are associated with two of the most successful musicals in recent times, “Hairspray,” which they produced, and “Chicago,” which they exec produced. Duo are currently shooting Paramount’s “Footloose” redo (Zadan produced the original “Footloose.”), which opens April 1, 2011.
Zadan, Meron and Stamos have worked together on several projects. Nor is the Fox 2000 musical the first time they have visited the subject of the Beach Boys. Stamos was a producer on the 2000 movie “The Beach Boys: An American Family” along with Meron and Zadan.
Stamos is repped by WME.
