Fortissimo Films has acquired worldwide rights, excluding Germany, on Mika Kaurismaki’s feature length doc “Mama Africa” from Starhaus Filmproduktion.
Pic tells the story of the legendary South African singer and anti-apartheid campaigner Miriam Makeba, who became one of the first African performers to achieve international stardom.
Kaurismaki previously helmed “L.A. Without a Map,” starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche and Vincent Gallo.
The deal on “Mama Africa” was completed by Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner and Starhaus’ Rainer Kolmel.
“The music, achievement and stature of the late Miriam Makeba created a story that needed to be told, felt and seen,” said Werner. “Mika Kaurismaki is crafting a moving tribute to keep this flame lit for generations to come.”
