Formula One doc revs up

Project focuses on sport's evolution, danger, glamour

Making a definitive film about Formula One racing has eluded most who’ve tried, so perhaps a documentary is the way to go.

At least Spitfire Documentary Films, Diamond Docs and Flat-Out Films hope so. The three producers are teaming on a Formula One feature doc to span the history and evolution of the dangerous and glamorous world of Formula One.

Diamond Docs’ Mark Monroe and Paul Crowder will write and direct, respectively.

Monroe penned Oscar nominee “The Cove” and 2010 Sundance fave “The Tillman Story.” A longtime editor, Crowder cut films including 2004’s “Riding Giants” and co-helmed 2007’s “Amazing Journey: The Story of the Who.”

Flat-Out Films’ Michael Shevloff and Spitfire PicturesNigel Sinclair will produce.

“Our goal is to achieve a bigscreen action documentary experience with all of the style and charisma of the era,” said Shevloff.

Sinclair added, “The heyday of Formula One racing was a very different time, when the risks were high and the characters were larger than life.”

Pic is in production, with interviews under way with the sport’s various personalities, including the drivers, designers and engineers. Doc also has the support of F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone.

Spitfire Documentary Films is a division of Spitfire Pictures, the L.A.-based production division of Exclusive Media Group (EMG), which will majority finance the film. Spitfire’s doc projects include “The Story of the Who,” Martin Scorsese’s “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan” and an upcoming film with Scorsese about George Harrison.

Exclusive Film Distribution, a division of EMG, will handle worldwide sales.
