Argentina sales co. opens beachheads in Asia, U.S.

BUENOS AIRES — FilmSharks Intl., an international film sales company out of Latin America, is opening foreign beachheads to snare bigger titles and sell more.

The Buenos Aires-based company is setting up shops in West Hollywood, Calif., Seoul and Tokyo.

“Our strategy is to buy between 10 and 12 films per year with high artistic and production values that have capacity to sell to more than 12 to 15 countries,” FilmSharks founder and CEO Guido Rud told Daily Variety. “Of these at least four or five will be U.S. titles.”

FilmSharks is targeting the U.S. and Asia for bigger acquisitions and sales to build on a Latin America-strong catalog.

It already is handling international sales for Jonathan Parker’s “Untitled” and Ed Radtke’s “The Speed of Life.”

“The idea is to buy bigger titles in the U.S. and to buy them in the development stage. It’s easier to do that when you have an office in the U.S.,” Rud said. “And you can sell quicker in Asia when you have offices there.”

In another deal, FilmSharks picked up international duties outside Latin America for Argentine comedy “Igualita a mi” (Just Like Me), one of the hottest local draws of 2010 with a gross of $2.7 million in its first four weeks through Sept. 7. It is produced by Disney-backed Patagonik Film Group, which is based in Buenos Aires.
