Fathoming ‘Tempest’ special effects

Taymor says the Bard would approve

Touchstone unspooled “The Tempest” at El Capitan, and at the H.Wood after-party, helmer Julie Taymor said the Bard would have approved of all the special effects: “Shakespeare was writing a play that required magic. That’s what you can do with film.”

Alan Cumming especially enjoyed the CG aspect: “I actually quite like it when you have to imagine those weird birds flying around you. It’s better than actors sometimes. You have to speak to them between takes.”

But not everything in the pic is special effects.

Djimon Hounsou said his wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, pushed him to take the project: “I am glad, but halfway through the project I was cursing her, Julie, and everyone else on the film because my five-hour-long makeup drove me absolutely insane.”
