Janus Metz’s “Armadillo,” Joonas Berghall and Mika Hotakainen’s “Steam of Life” and Patricio Guzman’s “Nostalgia for the Light” have been nominated for this year’s European Film Award for documentary.
Examining both the horror and adrenaline rush of warfare, Metz’s pic, which won this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prix and caused a political furor in Denmark, follows a group of Danish soldiers in Afghanistan.
“Steam of Life” offers a collection of conversations between Finnish men in saunas who bare their souls as well as their bodies.
In “Nostalgia for the Light,” Chile’s barren Atacama Desert hosts astronomers searching the heavens for clues to the origins of the universe, archaeologists looking for past cultures and women seeking the remains of loved ones who disappeared during the reign of dictator Augusto Pinochet.
This year all 2,300 members of the European Film Academy will be allowed to vote for the nominated documentary films for the first time.
Until now, the winner of the doc prize was chosen by a committee.
The 23rd EFAs will take place in Tallinn, Estonia, on Dec. 4.
