Scotts Sean Connery and Tilda Swinton hit Edinburgh

Scots Man

Sean Connery will be guest of honor at a gala screening of a remastered print of “The Man Who Would Be King.” Along with the opening night gala, it’s one of just two events taking place this year at the Festival Theater, a grand venue new to the film festival that was recently converted into Scotland’s largest digital cinema. The EIFF has a five-year deal to stage up to five events each year at the theater.

Kid-friendly pics

Tilda Swinton and former EIFF director Mark Cousins are launching their 8 1/2 Foundation with mass public dancing in Festival Square. This will be followed by a screening of the Iranian kid pic “Bag of Rice.” The Scottish Arts Council has helped fund 8? 1/2’s efforts to introduce kids to world cinema. The big idea is to give thousands of Scottish children a “film birthday” on the day they turn 8? 1/2, when the foundation will send them a gift package containing classic films from China, Africa and elsewhere.
