Robert Downey Jr. to possibly star in project from 'Next to Normal' duo
Continuing to ramp up their Team Downey banner, Robert and Susan Downey are developing a musical for Warner Bros. from a pitch by “Next to Normal” composers Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt.
The Downeys will produce the untitled pic as a possible acting vehicle for Robert Downey Jr. Anonymous Content will also produce.
Project will focus on a pair of down-on-their-luck songwriters who take counselor jobs at a theater camp.
Yorkey will write the script and lyrics while Kitt composes the music. The duo worked with Anonymous Content’s Joy Gorman and Team Downey’s David Gambino before the taking the project to Warner Bros.,
where Team Downey’s based. Sarah Schechter will oversee for Warners.
It’s the third pic for Team Downey, which unveiled its name earlier this year when setting up “Yucatan,” an action-adventure heist pic developed by the late Steve McQueen. The banner’s also working with Sony to develop Neil Strauss’ nonfiction tome “Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life,” the motivational story of one man’s journey to protect his loved ones by learning to survive in the wild.
The Downeys have worked on six films together — “Gothika,” “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” the two “Sherlock Holmes” films, “Iron Man 2” and “Due Date,” with Susan Downey serving as exec producer on the latter two. Robert Downey’s set to topline “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3.”
