Del Toro set for U’s ‘Delivery’

Helmer to produce action drama for studio

Guillermo del Toro is attached to produce action drama “Midnight Delivery” for Universal, adding to an impressive list of projects in development at the studio.

Neil Cross (“MI:5”) is writing the screenplay based on an original idea by del Toro. Gary Ungar will serve as exec producer.

News of the project was first reported on the site, which said the story centers on a father who becomes a drug mule to save his son’s life.

Scott Bernstein will oversee the project for the studio.

Del Toro made a longterm commitment in 2008 to Universal, where he has a first-look deal, on an adaptation of Dan Simmons’ novel “Drood” and remakes of “Frankenstein,” “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Slaughterhouse-Five.”

He left the directing slot of the two “Hobbit” films in May; he remains a producer and writer. He’s also been developing a feature version of H.P. Lovecraft’s “At the Mountains of Madness” for U, a project that was originally set at DreamWorks in 2004.
