Karlovy Vary offers homage to classic H'wood

Midnight madness continues to rage at Karlovy Vary with Ozploitation, a joyfully low-brow basket of Australian cult, horror and teen sex pics of the 1970s and 1980s, for the fest’s 45th edition.

Karlovy Vary’s strong tradition of retrospectives brings seven titles in homage to the classic Hollywood duo of Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell. Aside from the restored print of 1948’s “The Red Shoes,” program will feature docu “Cameraman” about master lensman Jack Cardiff, who won an Oscar for “Black Narcissus” in 1948 and was nommed three times, lastly for “Fanny” in 1961, along with shooting “Red Shoes” and 1946’s “A Matter of Life and Death.”

Thelma Schoonmaker, Martin Scorsese’s editor and Powell’s wife, will present, putting pics in context, while Pressburger’s grandsons, brothers Kevin Macdonald (“Last King of Scotland”) and Andrew Macdonald, producer of “Trainspotting,” will also host.

In addition, tributes to Czech horror master Juraj Herz and film scholar Karel Vachek will offer foreigners access to seminal local auteurs.

In the eight-film Belgian films focus, Jaco Van Dormael, director of the time-tripping “Mr. Nobody,” which preemed in Venice, will present. Felix Van Groeningen dark comedy “The Misfortunates,” which represented Belgium at the Oscars, and drama “My Queen Karo,” a hippie memoir by Dorothee van den Berghe, round out the slate.

Fabrice de Welz’s debut “The Ordeal,” a thriller outing, screened at Cannes’ Critics’ Week, as did “Lost Persons Area,” by Caroline Strubbe and “Private Lessons” by Joachim Lafosse.
