Sheen starrer part of Maya Indie Film Series

After playing film fests at home and abroad, “Chamaco (The Kid)” will hit theaters July 23rd as part of the Maya Indie Film Series.

Directed by Miguel Necoechea, pic stars Emmy and Golden Globe winner Martin Sheen alongside Alex Perea, Kirk Harris and Michael Madsen. Four-time world boxing champ Marco Antonio Barrera also makes an appearance as himself.

“Chamaco (The Kid)” tells the story of a father and son who rescue a boxing hopeful off the streets. Shot in Mexico city, pic is a U.S./Mexico co-production between Rogue Arts and Ivania Films.

Scripting trio includes RA founder Kirk Harris, filmmaker Carl Bessai and Necoechea, who won a Berlin Film Fest with “Innocent Voices” and Sundance/Venice fests for “Profundo Carmesi.”

The Maya Indie Film Series, sponsored by Blockbuster, showcases 8 critically-acclaimed films in the top U.S. markets. The multi-city event kicks off in Dallas on July 23rd and ends September 2nd in Los Angeles. LA events will tie in with local Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
