Mandate Pictures has tapped Thomas Carter to direct and produce its teen dance pic “Dream On.”
Carter is no stranger to the genre, having helmed such pics as “Save the Last Dance” and “Swing Kids.”
Story centers on a 17-year-old gymnast who has dedicated her life to becoming an Olympian. When an injury threatens her gold-medal dreams, she discovers the electricity, beat and passion of the underground hip-hop scene in downtown Atlanta.
Jason Ubaldi penned the screenplay.
Laurence Mark (“Julie & Julia,” “Dreamgirls”) is also producing. David Blackman, Rachel Miller and Mandate’s Nathan Kahane are exec producing. Tamara Chestna and Mary Lee are co-producing.
Mandate has the project on the fast track for a late 2010 production.
Lionsgate is handling international sales on this title.
Carter’s recent bigscreen credits include the sports pic “Coach Carter.”
He is repped by CAA and attorney Darren Trattner.
