Bird flies to ‘Widow’

Pic about Arab woman's sex life set to cause Mideast concern

British director Antonia Bird is venturing where few have dared by making “The Widow,” about the sexual awakening of a beautiful young Arab woman.

Pic, set in Egypt and Scotland, follows a young Egyptian woman whose journalist husband is murdered in Cairo. On a trip to Scotland, she meets a charismatic young man. The two then embark on a torrid and explicit exploration of sexual desire.

Dominic West (“The Wire,” “300”) is eyeing the role of the sexually adventurous Scot.

NDF Intl.’s Michiyo Yoshizaki, Ado Yoshizaki, Zack Winfield and United Arab Emirates-based distrib Gianluca Chacra are producing the $2.5 million project.

Bruce McLeod and Naomi Wallace have written the script.

The graphic sexual scenes would make the pic a controversial prospect in the Middle East, which is extremely conservative about such matters.

In a separate development, Chacra’s Front Row Entertainment has secured the Middle East and North Africa home entertainment rights to Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” from Sony Pictures Entertainment.
