Beveridge gives ‘Informant’ nerdy makeover

Makeup artist avoids caricature with Damon

After making Matt Damon look heroic in films like “The Bourne Supremacy” and “Invictus,” makeup artist Christine Beveridge decided to work from the inside out to make the actor look like the nerdy lead of “The Informant.”

“It was (helmer) Steven Soderbergh’s idea that he should look doughy,” Beveridge laughs. “So that meant Matt could eat more and not work out as much, but I wanted to add to that, so we used a dental appliance that fit over the top row of his teeth on both sides of his face to push his cheeks out a bit.”

While the look of corporate whistle-blower Mark Whitacre was important, Beveridge also was careful not to cross into the zone of caricature or take the alterations too far.

“It’s easy to push too much,” says Beveridge, who also worked with a team to fit Damon with a prosthetic to make his nose look wider, a mustache and a wig designed to actually look like it was a toupee. “So when we were putting everything together, we worked toward getting the essence of the character rather than being exact in our interpretation.”

Considering all those adjustments, Beveridge was able to put Damon’s look together in about 90 minutes each day.

“We worked quickly to make sure it wasn’t too much,” Beveridge says. “And Matt was a great sport about it.”
