Aquelarre takes ‘Babylon’

Seville fest generates multiple Spain pick ups

Luis Angel Bellaba’s Aquelarre has taken all Spanish rights to Mohamed al-Daradji’s “Son of Babylon,” Iraq’s foreign-language film Oscar entry.

An elegiac tale of a 12-year-old Kurdish boy’s odyssey across Iraq, grandmother in tow, in an attempt to locate his father, “Babylon” is produced by U.K.’s Human Film, Iraq’s Iraq-al-Rafidian and France’s CRM-114.

EuropaCorp-Roissy handles international sales.

Bellaba said he would launch “Babylon” in Spain on up to 10 prints, all subtitled.

Aquelarre pickup was sparked in part by “Babylon” taking top honors at November’s Seville European Film Festival, which provides E50,000 ($65,000) in cash for the winner’s distribution in Spain.

Other movies have also closed down Spanish distribution after selection for Seville.

Titles include docs “Draquila — Italy Trembles,” taken by Baditri, and “Jane’s Journey,” picked up by Wanda Films, plus Stephen Frears’ “Tamara Drewe,” which Alta nabbed for Spain, and “The Woman With a Broken Nose,” acquired by Sherlock Films.

Apart from “Babylon,” pickups were made before Seville unspooled, allowing distributors to benefit from festival promotion.
