An erupting volcano in Iceland may have vaporized “Iron Man 2’s” planned premiere in London, but the powers at Paramount, Marvel and Disney still managed to give the film a superhero’s welcome in Hollywood on Monday.
In just days, the studios were able to roll out a red carpet in front of Disney’s El Capitan Theater, where Susan and Robert Downey Jr. pulled up in the Audi R8 Spyder he drives in the film. Co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Leslie Bibb, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson and Mickey Rourke were also on hand to rep the pic, while Sylvester Stallone, J.J. Abrams, Dane Cook and Brad Bird were among the guests. Disney honchos Bob Iger and Rich Ross, and Par’s Sumner Redstone and Brad Grey repped Marvel’s owner and the film’s distrib.
Given the El Cap’s smaller size, the nearby Chinese Theater filled in as the preem’s overflow venue. While there was no afterparty, director Jon Favreau and cast took to a stage erected outside the theaters to introduce the film for guests, who also enjoyed a shower of fireworks and a performance by the Ironettes, a group of gold-clad dancers seen in the film.
