‘American’ takes in $1.7 million

Focus Features kicks off holiday weekend early

Focus Features kickstarted the holiday weekend with the Wednesday bow of George Clooney thriller “The American,” which grossed a solid $1.7 million from 2,721 locations on its opening day.

“The American” posted a per-screen average of $614. It expands to 2,823 engagements Friday.

Focus said there’s clearly an appetite for smart adult fare over the long Labor Day sesh.

“The American,” directed by Anton Corbijn, is expected to play heavily to femme auds, though men could also turn out due to the pic’s espionage theme.

Closest comparison is adult drama “The Constant Gardener,” which Focus Features likewise opened on the Wednesday before Labor Day in 2005. Film opened on fewer screens, grossing $929,829 from 1,324 screens

Film matched the opening day gross of Focus’ 2007 comedy “Balls of Fury,” which likewise opened on the Wednesday before Labor Day. Laffer took in $1.7 million from 2,812 locations.

“American” matched the opening day gross of another Focus pre-Labor Day release, British comedy “Balls of Fury,” which cumed $1.7 million on its opening Wednesday from 2,812 locations.

“The American” will go against this weekend 20th Century Fox’s Robert Rodriguez helmed “Machete” and New Line’s Drew Barrymore-Justin Long starrer “Going the Distance,” with Warner Bros. distribbing.
