Al-Daradji receives Variety award

Kudo delivered at Abu Dhabi Film Festival

LONDON — Iraqi helmer Mohamed Al-Daradji was feted with Variety’s Middle East filmmaker of the year award at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival on Tuesday.

Helmer, whose “Son of Babylon” is Iraq’s Oscar entry for foreign-language film this year, is also in the emirate to present his feature “In My Mother’s Arms.” A work in progress, pic received a development grant from the Abu Dhabi Film Festival’s new Sanad film fund.

Al-Daradji grew up in Baghdad and the Netherlands and is known for his intense portrayals of post-Saddam Hussein Iraq through docus and features.
