Actress in talks to join Garry Marshall's romantic comedy

Abigail Breslin is in talks to join the cast of New Line’s “New Year’s Eve,” a spinoff to Garry Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day.”

Lea Michele previously signed on to the pic, with both thesps expected to be a part of a large ensemble similar to the one in “Valentine’s Day.”

Pic will be set in New York and follow intertwining stories of characters trying to navigate their way through romance on New Year’s Eve. No specifics were given on the character 14-year-old Breslin will play.

Marshall is expected to return to direct, as are producers Mike Karz and Wayne Rice and screenwriter Katherine Fugate.

A start date for production has not yet been set, but New Line has given the film a Dec. 9, 2011, release date.

“Valentine’s Day,” which also included multiple storylines and starred Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner and Julia Roberts, grossed $110 million domestically.

Breslin recently starred in “Janie Jones” and lends her voice to Par’s toon “Rango,” which bows March 4.
