Worthington in talks for ‘Dracula’

'Avatar' actor eyes Universal horror pic

Sam Worthington is moving from Pandora to Transylvania: The “Avatar” thesp is in negotiations to star in “Dracula Year Zero” for Universal Pictures.

Alex Proyas will helm the pic; Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are penning the script.

Universal is keeping the logline under wraps, but story explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler and depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.

Universal is tapping into its horror legacy here. Studio released the 1931 Bela Lugosi film, which helped launch a slew of horror franchises for U in the 1930s and ’40s, including “Frankenstein,” “The Wolfman” and “The Invisible Man.” U also released the 1979 Frank Langella version of “Dracula” and next month will reignite “The Wolfman,” helmed by Joe Johnston.

Michael De Luca is producing “Dracula Year Zero.” Recently upped exec Jeff Kirschenbaum shepherds the project for U.

Worthington, who recently starred in “Terminator Salvation” and will next be seen in a remake of “Clash of the Titans,” is attached to star in sci-fier “The Last Days of American Crime.”
