Comedy Impact Report 2010: Bigscreen Bigshots

Things have certainly flipped for Will Ferrell since his last flop. Though some questioned whether auds had cooled on the “Saturday Night Live” alum after 2009’s “Land of the Lost,” this year saw the star drive two major B.O. hits, live-action “The Other Guys” (with $169 million worldwide) and DreamWorks Animation’s superhero send-up “Megamind” ($163 million and counting).

Ferrell was back in familiar territory on “The Other Guys,” his fourth feature collaboration with director Adam McKay, but “Megamind” was a riskier venture. “You just have to trust the director and the creative team that it all will coalesce in a way that makes sense, because you’re slightly blind doing it,” Ferrell says.

But Ferrell isn’t interested in playing it safe. He recently wrapped the Spanish-language comedy “Casa de mi padre,” slated for next year, and attempted a more dramatic role with indie project “Everything Must Go,” which premiered at the Toronto festival.

In addition to his feature film slate, Ferrell is keeping his eye on as a potential “birthplace for content,” he says. “It remains to be seen whether we can get stuff that could turn into webisodes, features, or is it just a place for new talent to be discovered?”
