XYZ Films' thriller set in struggling Detroit
Indie producer XYZ Films has tapped Ric Roman Waugh (“Felon”) to direct action thriller “Land of the Free,” set in Detroit against the collapsing auto industry.
Waugh will also produce alongside XYZ Films’ Nick Spicer, Nate Bolotin, and Aram Tertzakian.
Lee Toland Krieger, who received a Spirit Award screenplay nom for “The Vicious Kind,” is penning a script focusing on blue-collar resentment.
The deep sense of anger building within the working class who’ve all been affected by the overall financial, housing and health care crisis, and in a time of war…while the top 1% not only continue to get richer, but are rewarding themselves with bonuses is a pressure-cooker situation just waiting to explode,” Waugh said. “Detroit is the epicenter of that angst which makes it the perfect backdrop.”
Waugh wrote and directed the prison-set thriller “Felong,” starring Stephen Dorf, Sam Shepard, Harold Perrineau and Val Kilmer. Waugh is also set to direct “The Untitled Bobby Martinez Project” from a script he rewrote for Participant Media with State Street Pictures producing.
