Ti West scares up ‘Innkeepers’

Horror director, Dark Sky Films prepping haunted hotel pic

Horror helmer Ti West is prepping “The Innkeepers,” about the last two staffers of a haunted hotel that’s going out of business.

MPI Media Group’s Dark Sky Films will finance and produce along with Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix. Derek Curl, Fessenden and Peter Phok produce. West and MPI exec VP Greg Newman concluded the production deal at Sundance, which wrapped on Sunday.

West said he intends “Innkeepers” to be “a truly terrifying” follow-up to his 2009 pic “The House of the Devil.” Lensing will begin in Connecticut this spring.

Chicago-based homevid specialist MPI also financed West’s “House of the Devil,” which was distributed Stateside by Magnolia Pictures’ genre label Magnet Releasing.

West directed Lionsgate’s “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever,” which bows on DVD next month. Helmer had been attached to Gold Circle’s “The Haunting in Georgia.”

Writer-director Fessenden has been involved as a producer and an actor on a number of West’s pics starting with the helmer’s 2005 feature debut “The Roost.” Fessenden is nominated for the Producers Award at the upcoming Spirit Awards.

Among other MPI-backed pics is Adam Green’s “Hatchet 2,” a sequel to Anchor Bay’s 2007 hit “Hatchet,” which is now in production. MPI retains distrib rights to the pic. Company also recently picked up Michele and Kieran Mulroney’s “Paper Man,” starring Jeff Daniels and Ryan Reynolds.
