Sundance’s ‘Freebie’ gets deal

Phase 4 picks up rights to Next pic

Toronto-based Phase 4 has picked up North American rights to Katie Aselton’s “The Freebie.”

Film showed in Sundance’s low-budget, DIY-focused Next section.

Aselton, making her directorial debut, stars alongside Dax Shepard. The duo play a settled married couple who allow each other a “night off.”

Producer is Adele Romanski. Aselton, who is married to writer-director-thesp Mark Duplass, starred in his and his brother Jay’s feature bow “The Puffy Chair,” which screened at Sundance in 2005. She also has a part in the Duplass’ “Cyrus,” a Fox Searchlight pic that’s slated to bow July 9.

A theatrical rollout for “The Freebie” is planned for this summer.

Phase 4’s Larry Greenberg negotiated the pact with sales shop Submarine Entertainment.

Launched last year and headed by CEO Berry Meyerowitz, Phase 4 handled the Canadian theatrical and U.S. DVD release of “Valentino: The Last Emperor” last year and will distribute “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel” Stateside in late spring.
