‘Strangers’ introduced to Integral

Co-Production Meeting bonds prospective partners

“A Prophet” producer Chic Films is in advanced negotiations with Alfred Huermer’s Munich-based Integral Film for Integral to co-produce Chic’s “Wayfaring Strangers.”

Pic is one of the projects announced at the Berlinale’s 4th Capital Regions for Cinema Co-Production Meeting, which took place Tuesday.

Already tapping SoficaGallic tax coin and with Treasure Entertainment on board as an Irish co-producer, “Strangers” will be directed by Stephen Bradley, whose latest feature, “Boy Eats Girl,” was picked up for U.S. distribution by Lionsgate. Bradley wrote the screenplay for “Strangers,” a character-driven thriller set in Occupied France during World War II. “Strangers” is skedded to begin shooting in August, said Chic’s Lauranne Bourrachot.

“Strangers” turns on a unit of British paratroopers held by their German captors in a remote farmhouse whose farmer family is sheltering a young Jewish couple.

Principal cast includes Niels Arestrup (“A Prophet”), Sylvie Testud (“Sagan”) and John Lester (“The Wind That Shakes the Barley”).

Further CRC Meeting highlights included, in a vast range of projects, Rouge Intl.’s “Berlingrad” from France and Fernando Colomo P.C.’s “La bande a Picasso” from Spain.

“Berlingrad” is the second film by Serbia’s Stefan Arsenijevic (“Love and Other Crimes”), whose short “(A)Torsion” was a Berlin Golden Bear and U.S. Academy Award nominee.

It has been written in English by Arsenijevic and takes place in Berlin.

The E700,000 ($950,000) pic is a “romantic comedy in the ‘Before Sunrise’ vein. It’s light, funny and entertaining,” said French thesp Julie Gayet (“Eight Times Up”), who as a producer, partners with Nadia Turincev at Rouge Intl.

One standout project from Spain at the CRC Meeting was helmer-producer Fernando Colomo’s comedy “La bande a Picasso,” budgeted at $9.5 million-$11 million and aiming to be shot in French in Paris.

Set between 1907 and 1911, “Bande” features a young Picasso at the dawn of Cubism, embroiled in a caper to steal some ancient Iberian statues.
