Mark Wahlberg: ‘Other’ career as a comic actor

Comedy Impact Report 2010: Bigscreen Bigshots

Before “The Other Guys,” who knew Mark Wahlberg could be funny?

“I have to kind of pat ourselves on our back,” says co-star Will Ferrell. “I think we kind of did. Between (director Adam McKay) and myself, we just knew there was the potential because we were such fans of his work as a dramatic actor, and we felt he would be a great person for me to play off of.”

It was actually the seriousness that Wahlberg brought to some of his other roles that convinced them. “We thought if you put that intensity in a different context, he would work great in comedy,” Ferrell says. “We had a hunch.”

Besides, the “Entourage” exec producer isn’t a complete stranger to comedy. Like a good sport, Wahlberg dropped in on “Saturday Night Live” after Andy Samberg parodied him on the show last year, and he had fun with his own image playing a shirtless secret agent in another hit 2010 comedy, “Date Night.”

According to Ferrell, no one expected just how silly Wahlberg was on set.

“The other thing that surprised us was (him) jumping into the whole improvisational style that we do. He’s just very truthful, and that’s all we ever ask of any actors who join our crazy movies.”
