‘Iron Man 2’ looks to Imax

Sequel to get a limited rollout in the large format

Paramount and Marvel’s “Iron Man 2” will play a two-week run in Imax theaters as it unspools around the globe on May 7.

The Jon Favreau-directed sequel, returning Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, will be digitally remastered for Imax screens.

Film’s play in Imax theaters will be limited, as Paramount/DreamWorks Animation’s 3D toon “Shrek Forever After” opens two weeks later, on May 21. “Iron Man 2” is not a 3D title.

The large-format exhib had a banner year in 2009, fueled by the rise of 3D titles. Because there aren’t enough 3D screens in conventional theaters, Hollywood studios are eager to make use of Imax as well.

Imax has enjoyed record revenues from 20th Century Fox’s “Avatar.”
