Actor in talks to play Blackbeard in Disney sequel

Ian McShane is in talks to come aboard “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” Disney’s fourth installment in the franchise.

The gruff-voiced thesp would play Blackbeard, the infamous pirate and villain in the pic that Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow will have to face off against as he seeks out the Fountain of Youth.

Penelope Cruz is also negotiating to set sail (Daily Variety, Feb. 10) in the adventure that Disney has anchored to May 20, 2011.

Rob Marshall will helm from a script by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, who penned the previous pics.

Jerry Bruckheimer returns as producer.

McShane starred in HBO’s Western “Deadwood” and NBC’s “Kings.” He’s also lent his voice for “Caroline” and “Kung Fu Panda.” He can be seen in the pic “44 Inch Chest.”
