Hrebejk discovers ‘Innocence’

Czech helmer tackles rape drama

Czech director Jan Hrebejk, whose new film “Kawasaki’s Rose” opened Berlin’s Panorama Special last week to positive reviews, will shoot in Prague this summer on a new project, “Innocence,” about a family doctor accused of raping two young girls.

Czech actress Ana Geislerova, a member of this year’s Shooting Stars jury, will play the doctor’s sister-in-law in the movie, which is budgeted at $1.3 million.

Producer Rudolf Biermann of Czech company Infilm and his partner from Infinity, Tomas Hoffman, will produce and, in a deal announced Monday, Neil Friedman of Menemsha Films will handle international sales, as he has done for the past eight Hrebejk films.

Menemsha Films is set to release Hrebejk’s last film, “Shameless,” in the U.S. this spring following a career retrospective of Hrebejk’s work at the Cleveland Film Festival.
