Doc NYC to launch in November

Documentary-centered fest based at Gotham's IFC Center

A docu-focused Gotham film fest, Doc NYC Festival, will launch Nov. 3-7, centered around a competition slate of eight docs.

Event is spearheaded by managing director John Vanco, artistic director Thom Powers and exec director Raphaela Neihausen, the trio behind IFC Center’s “Stranger Than Fiction” series of docu screenings.

Gotham’s IFC Center, of which Vanco is VP and general manager, will be the base for Doc NYC, with opening and closing night events held at New York U.’s Skirball Center for Performing Arts. The NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies is the fest’s presenting partner, in association with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Five-day fest also aims to include documentary storytelling in genres other than film, including photography, prose and radio. Fest a.d. Powers is the documentary programmer at the Toronto Film Fest.

Lineup of Doc NYC films remains to be announced. The eight competition slots will emphasize world or U.S. preems.

“Doc NYC will fill an important void in New York City and will be a cornerstone for documentary storytellers all over the world to showcase premieres, hold panels and give audiences the thrill of discovery,” Vanco said.
