Disney sets date for del Toro’s ‘Dark’

Thriller set for domestic release on Jan. 21

Disney has set Guillermo del Toro’s “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” for domestic release Jan. 21 under the Miramax banner.

“Dark” is produced by Mark Johnson and del Toro, directed by Troy Nixey and stars Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison and Jack Thompson.

Del Toro and Matthew Robbins penned the adaptation of a 1973 ABC telepic, penned by Nigel McKeand.

Story centers on a young girl, portrayed by Madison, who’s sent to live with her father (Pearce) and his girlfriend (Holmes) in the old mansion they are renovating, where she unwittingly unleashes malevolent creatures bent on destroying all of them.

“Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is the first title to land on the Jan. 21-23 weekend.
