Crime film gets Aussie financing

Screen Australia approves funds for 'Snowtown'

SYDNEY — A pic by tyro helmer Justin Kurzel and a docu about filmmaker Paul Cox head the list of March funding approvals from Screen Australia that topped A$5 million ($4.5 million).

Kurzel’s “Snowtown” follows Down Under’s fascination with true crime and looks at serial killer John Bunting. Pic is produced by Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw.

“Australian filmmakers have a rich history of creating socially relevant cinema based on true-life crimes, as in ‘The Boys,’ or larger than life criminals as in ‘Chopper’ and ‘Snowtown’ that continues in this vein,” said Screen Australian topper Ruth Harley. “Paul Cox,” by docu helmer David Bradbury, looks back at Cox’s life and work after a life-saving liver transplant.
