‘Crazy Heart’ to open Karlovy Vary

More than 200 pics to screen at Czech fest

The Czech Republic’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival kicks off today with helmer Scott Cooper presenting “Crazy Heart.”

More than 200 pics will unspool during the nine-day event, including the international preems of 12 films.

Programmer Karel Och calls the annual event, which brings thousands of backpacker fans to the West Bohemia province, an eclectic assortment of work.

“There are no particular theme or genre requirements,” he said. “The film has to be appealing both emotionally and intellectually.”

The fest announced this week that thesp Adrian Grenier of HBO’s “Entourage” will be on hand to screen his docu, “Teenage Paparazzo,” about celebrity/media frisson.

His appearance adds to a guest list that includes British thesp Jude Law and Russian multihyphenate Nikita Mikhalkov, who will take home a Crystal Globe for contribution to world cinema and present his “Burnt by the Sun 2.”

Last-minute addition of a screening of helmer James Mangold’s “Knight and Day,” starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, is expected to draw crowds Saturday, standing out from the arthouse fare that will fill every available cinema in normally sleepy Karlovy Vary.

Karlovy Vary closes July 10 with a gala presentation of French helmer Pascal Chaumeil’s “Heartbreakers.”
